A. Fielding is a little confusing to read because he/she separates the verb from the direct object with clause after clause in between. This causes a little rereading from time to time. Then, too, this book has quite a few misspellings and when a character's name is misspelled the same way several times, the reader thinks there is a new character in the story. With all that said, I enjoyed the plot and development of the story. This was a good Whodunit.Product details

On the whole, I am sorry I bought this book. Though I did finish it, I rushed through to the end. Now you'll want to know why. I enjoy English mysteries from the 30s and it began well enough. Then a character was introduced who was just unpleasant and I almost dropped it. There is quite enough misdirection and obfuscation to make the surprise ending a surprise; but, once revealed, it was not a surprise at all. If you pay attention all the things that irritate or make you stop and say "why did he/she do that?" it points right to the perp and there are way too many plot points that just nagged at me. From the main device for committing the murder, to the motivations of the characters, to the behavior of the Scotland Yard Inspector, all just fell on the wrong side of sensible. You might enjoy it if you don't think about it as you read it.
It was an ok read. I expected much more from it though.
It seemed very far fetched about so many things, it was hard to believe the story.
I have enjoyed A. Fielding's writing. Just hit a few that didn't appeal to me.
I will however continue to read more.
This review is for the paperback reprint of "The Tall House Mystery" (author A.E. Fielding) by "Resurrected Press". This is my second review of reprints by Resurrected Press of the A.E. Fielding books. The mystery is another good A. E. Fielding mystery, with Chief Inspector Pointer as an excellent character, BUT the editing of this edition, although not quite as bad as editing of "The Wedding Chest Mystery", is certainly less than acceptable. Again, it appears that the original hardbound book was scanned, but the publisher's OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software is not of high quality AND there has been no assurance via editing to assure that the book is the same as the original work. There are many words that make no sense in the sentences in which they are used, sentences are run together with no punctuation, there are misspelled words which could have been caught by a simple "spell-check", and words that are incorrect with respect to the original work. In fact, one of the important characters, Mr. Ingram, becomes Mr. Ingrain occasionally. And, within several locations, a sentence stops (via a "hard-return") before the end of the line and the remainder of the sentence is indented beginning on the next line. If you can get through the bad editing, the mystery is a good mystery.
After reading one original hardbound mystery (old hardbound book) by A. E. Fielding, and finding the mystery to be an excellent mystery and excellently written, I bought 11 of these reprints from because I could not find the originals. This is the second of the 11 which I have read and I will continue to review the remaining reprints when I have finished reading them. It is truly a bad reflection on the publishing industry when a publisher does not care about correct scanning of the old classical books. I, personally, will never buy another book that has been published by this publisher.
